Care in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Legislature is being pressured by the ADA to introduce a bill that creates a monopoly on nutrition services for dietitians. Educate your legislators and make sure they don’t buckle under pressure. Provide your legislators with the support they need to oppose this draft bill now, before it is introduced in the Wisconsin legislature.

As we told you before, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has sponsored legislation much like this in over 40 states. This is the organization that lists among its corporate sponsors soft drink giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, cereal manufacturers General Mills and Kellogg’s, candy maker Mars, and Unilever, the multinational corporation that owns many of the world’s consumer products brands in foods and beverages.

This draft bill greatly limits the practice of other nutrition professionals. It denies consumers access to expert advice from nutritionists, some of the most highly educated and well-respected professionals in the field of nutrition.

Under this draft bill nutritionists must go through the dietetic program and licensure as a “dietitian nutritionist” in order to practice “dietetic nutrition care services” – even though nutritionists are often far more qualified, many with PHDs, and approach nutrition with an entirely different philosophy.

This bill is of great concern because:

  1. “Dietetic nutrition care services” is defined very broadly in the bill to include everything from counseling to assessment and evaluation based on nutrition science – all within the scope of practice of any self-respecting nutritionists.
  2. Even though the licensure calls itself “dietitian nutritionist” in reality the qualifications are tailored for dietitians alone under the ADA program. The title is purposefully misleading and is intended to exclude the qualifications and training of nutritionists.

This draft bill effectively eliminates an entire profession and removes all competition in the field of nutrition services.

Each individual has unique nutritional needs and deserve access to choice. It's not a one-size-fits-all approach. Nip this monopolistic bill in the bud! Prevent this bill from being introduced in the Wisconsin legislature to ensure that you have the right to choose your form of nutritional care from as large a pool of professionals as possible.
