Ulcerative Colitis -
In April of 2002, at age 16, I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, which is an "umbrella" for ulcerative colitis and Chrohn’s disease. My symptoms leaned toward ulcerative colitis (ulcers in the lower part of the colon). I had a colonoscopy and started taking medicine, but after ten and a half months of medicine (I was taking 9 pills a day, the maximum amount that an adult could take), my symptoms were not getting any better. A few days before my next appointment, in January 2003, Mom decided to get on the internet and find out more about my illness. While she was searching, she ran across an article on irritable bowel syndrome by Karen. The "natural method" was something we had never considered before. In this article, Karen presented her "White Diet." When I had my doctor's appointment, Mom asked the doctor if it would be alright to try the "White Diet". She replied, "It has not been scientifically proven to help, but you can try it." She wanted to put me on enemas. Mom did not want to do that, and she told me that we would start the diet. I was also taken off all of my medicine. Two weeks after I quit taking my medicine, I started having severe intestinal cramping. My body was having withdrawals from the medicine. Up until now, the medicine had kept me from feeling the usual symptoms of ulcerative colitis, but now it was different. I began to have severe diarrhea along with my bleeding. By now Mom and Dad were desperate. Mom e-mailed Karen, told her all that had happened, and asked if she could help. Karen said she could, and we set up a phone consultation for the following week. Following what Karen said, I slowly began to get better, and then--exactly a year and 20 days after I had first begun to talk with Karen--I was released, well enough to no longer need Karen's care. And now I am a normal, healthy teenage girl. I still have to be careful with some things I eat, and I think it will always be a weak point with me, but I have learned to watch what my body does. I am so thankful to have met Karen, and so grateful for all that she has done. I would not hesitate to refer her to anyone who is suffering, because I have been there, and I have also been set free. Karen is truly a gift of God in my life.
Thank you so much!

A friend of mine ended up in the hospital last weekend. He was put on IV's, and is on 80 mg of prednisone, among other medications for ulcerative colitis.
The doctors want to remove his colon! Today I spoke with him and informed him that just because your colon is gone, the acid is still recycling in your intestines and in your body. I also told him that the medical profession typically doesn't recommend or understand the nutritional benefits to treat colitis.
Karen, I told him how much you have helped me (with pouchitis) after my J-pouch surgery. I told him that, before I went to you, that I couldn't walk or run 2 miles without worrying where a bathroom was, because I had to go!! The cramps were so bad. Guess what; this weekend, I will be running a half marathon (13.1 mi) and am not even worried where the bathrooms will be! I am so thankful for you, and love you for pursuing your career as a nutritionist. I feel so alive and well!
